Scientific Method

It never ceases to amaze me how stupid and gullible the human race can be.

Last night I was watching a TV show about “Ancient Aliens”. The show compared the monolithic idols from Easter Island with monolithic idols from an ancient Native American culture and quickly concluded that the “Striking Similarities” between the idols from the two different origins was conclusive evidence that they both had been made to represent the same “Ancient Alien Visitors”.

They ran the side by side comparison of the two forms of idols on the screen for less than 1 second before changing the picture and posing this claim, so I took the opportunity to back up the picture and compare the idols for myself, at which point it was entirely obvious that there were not any “Striking Similarities”. The idols from Easter Island had sharp square chins, large hourglass noses in the center of the face, detailed crafted chests and shoulders, and no legs. The idols from the Native American culture had round beard like chins, small rounded noses at the top of the face, featureless chests and shoulders, and distinct leg shapes. The only similarities between the two were that they were each carved of stone, and were representative of a human-like form. Later in the show a third idol example from an Asian culture was also offered which again did not have any “Striking Similarities”. The Asian idols had perfectly circular faces and chins, carefully carved circular lines for the facial features, flat noses, and the absence of a neck and shoulders.

The show also claimed that these idols not having anatomically accurate human faces was evident that they were carvings of aliens not humans. The conclusions were so wild and baseless that one could make the same argument that the artist Picasso must have been painting aliens with his abstract artwork.

Another thing about this TV show was its continuously drawing conclusions based on the questions it declared. The entire narration went something like, “Could it be that… and if that is true could it be that… and if so could it be that… and therefore this must be evident of ‘Ancient Aliens’.” There was talk of energies being present in monoliths, complete with CGI representations of these alleged energies as though they were fact, even though no scientific measurements were given to support this. There was talk that certain stone structures must have been ‘Alien Radio Antennas’ because the stone from which they were carved contained quartz. In my lifetime I have seen many scientifically baseless shows, but this particular show had to be one of the worst I have ever seen for leaping to wild conclusions without any actual supporting evidence.

What is so sad, however, is not that someone made a stupid TV show, it is that this TV show with all of its stupidness is a completely accurate representation of modern scientific method and teaching. “Evolution” and “Big Bang” follow the exact same “Conclusions Based on Questions” pattern as was ludicrously demonstrated by this show. “Could it be that… and if that is true could it be that… and if so could it be that… and therefore we all must have ‘evolved’ from monkeys.” We see CGI pictures of dinosaurs and we falsely believe they are based on science not Hollywood. We see CGI pictures of astronomical explosions, and we think they are real video captures when they again are just Hollywood, and what was actually captured was a fuzzy radiation spike on a line graph. We see CGI of alien planets and we don’t make the connection that the Hollywood rendition on the screen is based entirely on a shadow that passed in front of an unreachably distant star.

For most of the human race, seeing is believing, so if somebody puts a picture in front of our eyes and tells us that the picture proves something, we fall for it hook, line, and sinker.

The Bible says that the fool believes in his heart there is no God (Psalm 53:1).

Proverbs 1:7 - The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. (NIV)
