How Will You Weather The Storm?
If you’ve been watching the news you know about hurricane Sandy that hit the east coast over the last few days, which it would seam was conveniently timed to distract people from the upcoming election and promote one party’s desire for bigger government to come save us all, when what we really need is government that acts responsibly and with self control.
Before you get caught up in the moment, let me remind you of a another storm from the Bible. Mark 4:35-41 gives account of a storm that Jesus and his disciples ran into when they were crossing a lake. You may recall that the disciples were in a panic because the boat was swamped by the waves, but Jesus was sleeping calmly in the back of the boat until the disciples woke him. Then Jesus rebuked the winds and they ceased, and he rebuked his disciples for not having faith.
I’m sure a lot of you are familiar with this story, but let me tell you the rest of the story and how it applies today. Mark 5:1-20 gives account of what happened at the other side of the lake, where they encountered the demon possessed man with the legion of demons that Jesus sent into a herd of pigs and downed in the lake.
What you need to understand is that the storm and the demons were not separate events. The wind and waves that made the disciples panic were brought on by an evil that recognized its time was at an end. Let me assure you that the same is true with hurricane Sandy.
Do not get caught up in the calamity of the situation and despair that evil has won. evil did not win in the boat on the lake, and it will not win today either. Take your example from how Jesus responded to the storm. Hold on to your faith, command the storm to settle down, and rest at ease, because tomorrow evil will meet its demise with the very fate that you were afraid of.
