What Is A Lie?
I am becoming increasingly disturbed at the media and their vicious attacks against U.S. president George W. Bush. A now common bumper sticker summarizes the extent of their arrogance "Bush lied… thousands died…".
According to Webster’s dictionary, to lie is "to make an untrue statement with intent to deceive, to create a false or misleading impression" 1. Hence the accusation is that president Bush deceived the United States into thinking there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq when he knew there were not.
The assault continues, accusing president Bush of uncaringly sending U.S. soldiers to their deaths, suggesting that he bears full responsibility for those deaths rather than the terrorists who strap bombs onto their own babies.
I remember the start of the war when president Bush announced his intentions to the public. Yes, he said that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, but he also told us why he believed that, and the evidence he presented was extensive. Yes, his conclusions may have been wrong, but that does not make them dishonest.
There is a lie here, but it did not come from the mouth of the president. It has spread across the country like a swarm of killer bees. If you say something often enough, people start to believe it no matter how little merit it has. It is a demonic thing that came from hell itself, and it is powerful enough to take down our nation if we don’t do something about it.
You don’t have to like president Bush. You don’t have to agree with him. You don’t have to support him. But don’t accuse him of lying about something he didn’t, BECAUSE THAT IS THE REAL LIE.
