Can a Christian vote for a mormon candidate?

Since one of the leading republican presidential candidates is mormon, I think it is time to address this question.

mormonism is a cult. The book of mormon is a work of fiction that could no more pass the tests of canonization than other fiction writings rejected in the 4th century, like the gospels of Judas and Thomas 1. That being said, however, the mormons do believe in the Bible, and although the book of mormon can be a significant stumbling block for them, their religion does have access to the truth.

The Bible says "That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved (Romans 10:9-10 NIV)." It is important to understand that the words "except for mormons" are not found anywhere in this scripture. mormons can be saved. mormons can receive the power of the Holy Spirit. On the great day of judgement there will be some mormons among those who enter into heaven.

Yes the mormon’s follow another book, but many Christians also follow their own books which are just as unscriptural as the book of mormon. I don’t care if a book has sold 20 million copies and the author has performed actual miracles, the foundation of Christianity is Christ, and the standard that all teachings must measure up to is the Bible, not the latest 40 day fad.

I find it fascinating that so many Christians have chosen the presidential race to finally draw a line in the sand for what religious beliefs they will elect. In the past they have had no problem voting for atheists, criminals or perverted men for school boards, judge seats, city councils, governors, or representatives in congress or the senate, yet they refuse to vote for a mormon president? This hypocritical behavior is not what it means to be a Christian.

In the very worst case, a mormon candidate is misguided in his search for the truth, and he could in fact be a brother in Christ. Don’t you remember the astrology scandal at the end of Ronald Regan’s presidency, of how he dabbled in the occult and consulted the stars for presidential decisions? No one is perfect. That is why Jesus gave us the litmus test by which we should judge: "Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit... Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them (Mathew 7:17,20 NIV)."

Can a Christian vote for a mormon candidate? We would be better off voting for a mormon than many people we actually have voted for in the past.

Please understand, I am not saying that you should or should not vote for Mitt Romney, but don’t rule him out for the wrong reasons. Religion is only one of many factors to consider in your choice, and you should consult God for who He wants you to vote for.
