Is it God’s Will for Me to be Sick?

Of course not! What kind of a father would want his kids to be sick? God is much better than that!

This wrong belief is usually brought on by a lack of faith, and a lack of understanding about God.

Then why am I sick?

1) Are you a child of God?

There is only one God, and only one way to join His family:

John 14:6 - Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (NIV)

Act 4:12 - “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (NIV)

Don’t expect other religions or beliefs to keep you healthy. They are all lies intended to hide Jesus from you, and keep you from recognizing who He is.

Don’t expect “doing good” to keep you healthy. No loving father would make their child sick as punishment for doing something wrong, and neither does God. If we don’t get sick for “doing bad”, why should “doing good” make us well?

If you aren’t a child of God, that’s where you need to start:

Acts 16:30-31 - He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household.” (NIV)

Believe that you are a sinner unable to stand in the presence of God because of your sin. Believe that God wants you to be part of His family even though you are a sinner. Believe that Jesus is God, and that He came into the world and created a way for sinners to become part of God’s family. Believe that now the only thing you need to do to become part of God’s family, is to ask.

It’s as simple as that. You say: “God, can I be part of your family?”

God’s answer: “YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome to the family!

2) Are you making yourself sick?

Gal 6:7-8 - Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. (NIV)

It’s called cause and effect. If you go out with your drug buddies and share a dirty needle, don’t be surprised when you get sick. If you ingest poisonous things that you know are bad for you, don’t be surprised when you get sick. If you sleep around with prostitutes, don’t be surprised when you get sick. But don’t think that God did it to you. You already know that dirty needles, poison, and diseases that other people carry can make you sick, but you chose to do what you did anyway. You brought the sickness on yourself.

Do you want to get well? Stop doing the stuff that is making you sick.

3) Are you relying on doctors and human wisdom to keep you well, instead of God?

1Cor 2:4-5 - My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God’s power. (NIV)

1Cor 1:20 - Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? (NIV)

Many people, especially in the United States, give doctors and medical research far too much credit. Here are some facts that may surprise and even shock you:

  • Did you know that medical mistakes is the number 1 killer of people in the United States1? More people die from medicine than auto accidents, war, or hurricanes.

  • Did you know that doctors are no more qualified at their profession than you are at yours? How often have you made a decision based on a guess, and then found out later that it was wrong? The many years of college and residency a medical professional goes through does not make them any smarter or better than anyone else. They screw up just as much as everybody else. The only difference is that when they screw up, it is more likely to be a matter of life and death, because saving lives is their profession.

  • Did you know that most of the medical industry is run by greedy people who are trying to make money? They don’t make money if they provide treatments that actually cure your sickness. Their profits come from treatments that are only partly successful or temporary, so that you need to keep coming back for further treatment. They have no benefit in curing you, and no incentive to tell you if a cure does exist. It is no accident that the richest companies in the world are drug manufacturers.

  • Did you know that there are cures available, with incredible success rates, for almost all of the big diseases that people are afraid of, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and HIV, but that your doctor has probably either never heard of them, or has been lied to about their effectiveness.

Why then do we place our lives in the hands of these people, when we have a much better option? There is no disease that God can’t or won’t cure. There is no charge for God’s treatment. It never involves painful or dangerous invasive surgery. God never has an ulterior motive for making us well. And with God, not even death is a terminal condition.

Do you want to get well? Before you take an aspirin or cold capsule, and before you consider going to the doctor, you should first go to God.

Does that mean I should never go to the doctor or take any medicine?

Please don’t misinterpret what I have said. There are many good doctors who help people. It would be foolish to reject or disregard what they have to offer. The problem is not going to a doctor or taking medicine, it is going to them before you consult God.

Luke, who wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts was a doctor. Paul gave medical advice to Timothy in the same way a doctor might advise you (1Ti 5:23). The Bible gives prophetical reference to balms and medicines (Jer 8:22). When Jesus told the healed leper to show himself to the priest, that was equivalent to going to a doctor in modern times to confirm you are cured (Mat 8:4). Clearly there is a place for doctors in Christian society. We just need to make sure it is the right place.

  • If you are sick, always go to God first before you do anything else. If you do this, you may find yourself not needing to visit the doctor nearly as often.

  • It is ok to have a doctor diagnose what is wrong with you, but don’t be in fear of your life because of what they tell you.

  • It is ok to let a doctor prescribe a treatment for your ailment. If God does not forbid you (and He will make it very clear if He does, so there is no misunderstanding) submit to the treatment or prescription.

  • If you are under treatment that you didn’t consult God about, you should consult Him now. He will tell you what you should do.

What if a prophet or traveling healer tells me I must do something to get well?

Put your faith in God, not in the prophet or healer. Some prophets and healers work for God, and some work for their own selfish ambitions.

If a prophet or healer tells you something that God has not already spoken to you, there is something wrong. Either you are not hearing God as you should, or their word is not trustworthy. In either case, your only resolution is to go back to God to clear things up.

Never trust any man blindly, no matter how prestigious their name is, or who recommended them, or how many other people seemed to benefit from them. Always go to God.

What if I’m still not getting well?

Call in reinforcements:

James 5:14-15 - Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. (NIV)

Mar 16:17-18 - “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” (NIV)

We have the promise of God, in the words of Jesus Christ Himself, to protect us from all disease and ailments. We need to believe in this promise.

James :)
